YOUTH HUNTING SEASONS AND REGULATIONS

Oklahoma has no minimum hunting age requirement. For hunter education requirements see page 8.

Youth Licenses

Resident Youth Hunting and Resident Youth Combination Hunting/Fishing: Legal residents of Oklahoma who are 16 or 17 years old are eligible to purchase the $5 annual youth hunting or $9 annual youth combination hunting/fishing license.

Resident Youth Deer Archery: Available to legal residents of Oklahoma who are under 18 years of age. The youth deer archery license may be used during the regular deer archery season.

Resident Youth Deer Gun and Resident Youth Deer Primitive: Available to legal residents of Oklahoma who are under 18 years of age. Each license costs $10. The youth deer gun license (antlered or antlerless) may be used during the youth deer gun season or during the regular deer gun season. The youth deer primitive license (antlered or antlerless) may be used during the regular deer muzzleloader season.

Resident Youth Holiday Antlerless Deer Gun: Legal residents of Oklahoma who are under 18 years of age are eligible to purchase the $10 youth Holiday Antlerless Deer Gun license. It may only be used during the Holiday Antlerless Deer Gun season.

Youth Deer gun

Age Requirements

Youth under 18 years of age. All youth while hunting are required to be accompanied by an adult, 18 years old or older. The adult cannot gun hunt, but may archery hunt while accompanying the youth hunter. The adult hunter may not possess any firearms.

License Requirements

Resident youth under 16 years of age: Exempt from the purchase of a hunting license and the Legacy permit. Youth 9 years of age or under must be hunter education certified to hunt deer. Must possess a youth deer license (antlered or antlerless) or an apprentice-designated youth deer license or proof of exemption.

Resident youth 16 and 17 years old: Must possess a hunting license  or proof of exemption. In addition, must possess a youth deer gun license (antlered or antlerless) for each deer hunted or proof of exemption.

Nonresident youth under 14 years of age: Must possess a nonresident deer license or apprentice-designated nonresident deer license (see page 18). Exempt from a hunting license and the Legacy permit. Youth 9 years of age or under must be hunter education certified to hunt deer.

Nonresident youth 14 - 17 years old: Must possess a nonresident deer license  and a Legacy permit. Exempt from a hunting license.

Dates & Open Areas

Oct. 17 - 19, 2008; statewide.

Youth Deer Gun Limit

One (1) antlered and one (1) antlerless deer.

Deer taken by youth hunters participating in the youth deer gun season are included in the hunter’s combined season limit but do not count as part of the regular deer gun season limit.

Harvest of antlerless mule deer is prohibited during the youth deer gun season.

Youth Deer Gun Licenses

Youth hunters who do not harvest a deer during the youth deer gun season may use their unfilled youth deer gun license(s) during the regular deer gun season to take a deer.

Youth hunters who do harvest a deer during the youth deer gun season may purchase another youth deer gun license and harvest a deer during the regular deer gun season.

Legal Means of Taking

Equipment described as legal for deer gun season.

Hunter Orange

Hunters participating in the youth deer gun season must conspicuously wear both a head covering and an outer garment above the waistline, both consisting of hunter orange color totaling at least 400 square inches. Camouflage hunter orange is legal.

Hunters participating in the youth deer gun season using archery equipment must conspicuously wear either a head covering or an outer garment above the waistline consisting of hunter orange. Camouflage hunter orange is legal.

Youth SPRING TURKEY

Age Requirements

Youth under 18 years of age. All youth while hunting are required to be accompanied by an adult, 18 years old or older. The adult may not hunt or possess any firearms or archery equipment.

License Requirements

Resident youth under 16 years of age: Must possess a turkey license or proof of exemption.

Exempt from a hunting license and the Legacy permit.

Resident youth 16 and 17 years old: Must possess a hunting license (see page 7) and a turkey license or proof of exemption.

Exempt from the Legacy permit.

Nonresident youth under 14 years of age: Must possess a turkey license or proof of exemption. Exempt from a hunting license and a Legacy permit.

Nonresident youth 14 - 17 years old: Must possess a nonresident annual hunting license, the Legacy permit, and a turkey license for each bird to be hunted unless otherwise exempt.

Nonresident lifetime license holders are required to purchase a nonresident annual hunting license and turkey license(s).

The nonresident five-day hunting license is not valid for hunting turkey.

April 4 - 5, 2009; statewide.

Season Limit

The limit is one (1) tom turkey.

Turkeys taken by youth turkey hunters participating in the spring youth turkey season are included in the youth hunter’s county and regular spring season limits.

Unfilled Spring Turkey License

Youth hunters who do not harvest a turkey during the spring youth turkey season may use their unfilled turkey license during the regular spring turkey season.

Youth Waterfowl Hunting Days

• Youth Waterfowl Weekends

Panhandle: October 4-5, 2008
Zone 1: October 11 - 12, 2008
Zone 2: October 25 - 26, 2008

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows two (2) additional days outside of the regular waterfowl season to provide a special waterfowl hunting opportunity for kids. Youth hunters must be 15 years of age or younger. An adult must accompany the youth hunter into the field. If the youth is hunter education certified, accompanying hunter must be 18 years of age or older. If the youth is not hunter education certified, accompanying hunter must be 21 years of age or older and hunter education certified or exempt. This adult cannot hunt waterfowl but may participate in other open seasons. The  daily limit may include ducks (including a pintail, a canvasback and mergansers), coots and geese. Limits are the same as the regular seasons. All species and sex specific duck daily limit restrictions remain in effect.

• Youth Waterfowl Hunts conducted by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation – These guided hunts are designed to provide youth who do not have an adult mentor who waterfowl hunts an opportunity to experience the traditions of waterfowling.

LOCATION: Altus-Lugert Lake, Canton Lake, Ft. Gibson Waterfowl Refuge, Ft. Cobb Lake Refuge, Hackberry Flat Waterfowl Refuge,  Okmulgee Public Hunting Area, McClellan/Kerr WMA- Vann’s Lake, McClellan/Kerr WMA-Webbers Falls Waterfowl Refuge, Wagoner Co., and Wister Lake Refuge

AGE: Applicants must be 12 to 15 years of age, have proof of successfully completing a certified hunter education course, and have an adult guardian who can accompany them on the hunt.

DEADLINE: Nov. 15, 2008.

HOW TO APPLY: Provide the following information on a 3x5 postcard: name, address, telephone number, youth’s hunter education number, and the name of the desired hunt location and two alternate hunt locations where they would like to hunt. The scheduled date of the hunt will be coordinated with successful applicants after the drawing. Applicants may apply only once. Applications must be received by November 15, 2008, and should be mailed to the Oklahoma
